Boston Post cane
By admin | December 26, 2009
Hazel Burdick has been awarded the Boston Post cane as Williamstown’s most senior citizen at 101. The tradition began in 1909 when the Boston Post newspaper, under the savvy ownership of Edwin A. Grozier, engaged in its most famous publicity stunt. The paper had several hundred ornate, gold-tipped canes made and distributed to the selectmen in New England’s largest towns for presentation to the town’s oldest living man. Fortunately for Hazel the custom was expanded to include a community’s oldest woman in 1930.
